Overview
Parental support is vital to us in maintaining the high standard of discipline, which we are used to at De Aston. In one area especially, we depend on your help - school uniform. Our uniform rules have been devised to try to achieve four objectives:
- An identity with the school
- Ready availability from suppliers
- Concern for the dignity and reputation of both the wearer and of the school
- Suitability for climate and seasons of the year
Look Smart — Feel Smart — Think Smart
With these aims in mind, we have tried to keep the rules as simple as possible. They do allow for some variation in what students can wear in school. Many items, which are acceptable in school, could also be worn outside school. Do please help us by checking each time your son or daughter comes to school that what he or she is wearing is within the rules.
Uniform Suppliers
All De Aston school uniform is available to order online via www.uniform-direct.com or in store at Uniform Direct, including Lincoln and Gainsborough. A range of items will also be made available to purchase in school via ParentPay.
As a school, we have high standards and expectations and thank you all in advance for supporting with this. The uniform helps our students, look smart, think smart and feel smart. We want our pupils to be dressed ready to learn and dressed appropriately for a school environment.
Years 7-11
Blazer |
De Aston school blazer with crest on pocket. Students may not roll up sleeves. |
Tie |
Clip on De Aston school tie. |
Shirt/Blouse |
Plain white formal school shirt, which must be buttoned to the top with no visible tops underneath. Shirts must be tucked in. |
Sweater (optional) |
De Aston black long sleeved V neck sweeter. This is not a replacement for the blazer and an optional item. If pupils choose to wear a jumper it must be the De Aston V neck and no other. |
Skirts |
De Aston grey, pleated, tartan skirt. The black skirt is no longer part of our uniform. |
Trousers |
Formal plain black trousers. Cropped or extremely tight trousers will not be permitted. Large flared trousers are also not permitted. |
Footwear |
Plain Black formal school shoes, with no excessive embellishments, worn with white or plain black socks/ black or neutral coloured tights. Please note we do not permit socks worn over tights. Trainers are not permitted as a substitute for school shoes. |
Outdoor Coat |
Standard coat: no hooded sweatshirt or any other form of sports top to be used as an outdoor coat. Hoodies are not permitted on site at all. |
Prohibited items and forms of dress |
Leggings, Shorts (other than during PE lessons). Cardigans, Scarves. Hats of any type. Trainer shoes. Canvas shoes. Any form of jewellery other than a single pair of ear studs. Any bracelets other than for medical alert. Facial piercings are not permitted. Tattoos or temporary tattoos. Any form of revealing clothing that exposes flesh or underwear. Inappropriate hair colouring and style. Excessive use of make-up, including false eyelashes are not permitted. Nail polish/ acrylic/ false nails are not permitted. Hair accessories inconsistent with formal school uniform. Earphones may not be worn. Wearing of long socks over the knee is not permitted. Wearing of socks of tights is not permitted. Wearing of boots and trainers is not permitted. Hats , scarf, gloves etc are not permitted inside the school building. Only a plain black belt permitted. |

PE Kit
It is the PE policy that all jewellery is removed when taking part in physical activity and that all long hair is tied back. We strongly suggest that students refrain from having their ears pierced during term time, so that earrings can be removed for all activities.
Girls’ indoor kit- white ankle socks, De Aston black PE top, De Aston black shorts/ plain black leggings (no branded Nike pro or similar) and Sports trainers.
Girls’ outdoor kit- black long socks, De Aston black PE top, De Aston black shorts/ plain black leggings (no branded Nike pro etc), black cotton rugby shirt with reversible strip. Gum shields, football boots and shin pads will be required for certain activities as advised by your teacher.
Boys’ indoor kit- white ankle socks, De Aston black PE top, De Aston black shorts (no branded Nike pro etc) and Sports trainers.
Boys’ outdoor kit- black long socks, De Aston black PE top, De Aston black shorts/ plain black skins (no branded Nike pro etc), black cotton rugby shirt with reversible strip. Gum shields, football boots and shin pads will be required for certain activities as advised by your teacher. Scrum hats are recommended for rugby sessions but not mandatory.
Optional- De Aston three quarter zip black jacket can be worn for outdoor lessons.
The school uniform must be worn fully and correctly from the moment the students enter the front gate, to the moment they leave, including lining up in the bus queues. The school will attempt to deal with uniform issues by loaning items of clean clothing until the matter can be resolved.
Persistent failures to comply with the uniform policy will be dealt with through the school’s Behaviour Management policy. Jewellery and accessory infringements will result in removal of the items, which may be confiscated and returned to parents. Trainers are not permitted to be worn as an alternative to school shoes and persistent failure to comply with this expectation will result in sanctions through the Behaviour Management policy. We want our students to look smart, feel smart and think smart.
If you have any queries, worries or concerns with uniform please contact your child’s Head of Year. All matters of uniform and dress can be discussed by students through the School Council. Final decisions on uniform rest with the Headteacher.

Sixth Form Dress Code
De Aston School Sixth Form sets high standards in all areas of school life. Our dress code reflects this and is important in setting the school’s climate and ethos.
Students are required to dress modestly and smartly – in a way that is suitable for an 11-18 school environment.
If the Head of Sixth Form or any member of the Senior Leadership Team deems a student to be unsuitably dressed, the school reserves the right to ask students to return home to change and dress appropriately. If it is not possible to return home then the student may be asked to work in a supervised location.
- Smart shorts (not sport shorts) may be worn but these must be plain and of at least knee length.
- Smart jeans may be worn, but must not be ripped.
- Skirts and dresses must be of a suitable length for decency, mid-thigh as a guide.
- Leggings/jeggings/tights etc. are permitted with a suitable top/skirt/dress which again is of reasonable length to reach mid-thigh.
- Clothing in general should not be skimpy or low cut. Students’ backs, midriffs or underwear should not be visible. Crop tops, vest tops etc. are not permitted.
- Footwear should be appropriate for school (no flip flops, open toed shoes/sandals, or excessively high heels).
- Hoodies and t shirts may be worn but these must not carry potentially offensive slogans or pictures.
- Make-up, nail varnish and jewellery may be worn but should not be excessive. Students can wear discrete ear rings and one discrete nose stud (visible tattoos or extremes of hairstyle/colour are not permitted).
- Hats/scarves/gloves/coats must not be worn inside the school building.
- Headphones must not be worn in school building or in bus queues. Headphones can be worn in designated areas only.
Suitability of clothing depends on subject choice, for example shorts may not be appropriate for workshops and laboratories etc. Students will be required to dress appropriately and to suit the lesson environment they are in.
Final word on what is deemed suitable rests jointly with the Head of Sixth Form and the Headteacher.
Enforcement of the Policy
The school insists that uniform is worn fully and correctly from the moment students enter the front gate, to the moment they leave it, this includes bus queues. This helps to create an orderly atmosphere within school and supports good behaviour. In addition, students are reminded that they represent the school whenever they wear the uniform.
It is the responsibility of the Headteacher and staff to enforce the uniform as part of the day to day running of the school. HOY and Form Tutors are responsible for monitoring the policy in the first instance as part of the Meet & Greet policy. Parents have a responsibility to ensure that their child comes to school in the correct uniform.
Because of the primacy of teaching and learning, the school will attempt to resolve uniform issues with students without removing them students from lessons. This will be achieved by temporarily loaning clean items of appropriate clothing until the matter can be resolved permanently.
Failure to comply with the School Uniform Policy will be seen as a breach of school rules and dealt with through the Behaviour Management Policy. In the event of repeated uniform infringements parents will be contacted. In specific areas relating to the repeated wearing of inappropriate skirts, students will relinquish the right to wear a skirt and will be asked to wear trousers. In the case of jewellery and other accessories the pupil will be asked to remove the item, which may be confiscated and returned to parents at a later date.
The Headteacher is the final arbiter in all matters of uniform and dress.
Issues arising from the policy
Parents should raise any issues relating to school uniform, dress code or other aspects of appearance with the Deputy Headteacher. Requests to vary the uniform requirements for particular reasons such as medical needs, will always be considered carefully.
Pupils may raise issues with their tutor or HOY. They may also request that uniform matters be put on the agenda of the School Council.
Support for families struggling with the financial implications of the change
No family experiencing financial pressures need be concerned, as the school will make confidential arrangements in conjunction with the Education Welfare Service to help meet the cost of uniform. In many cases, school uniforms are less expensive than the everyday clothing that students wear. Nonetheless, the cost of purchasing a uniform may be a burden to some families and the school will always endeavour to make provisions for students whose families are unable to afford uniforms.
Stockists of all uniform items
It should be noted that the school does not enter into exclusive contracts with any suppliers. The school would encourage families to purchase appropriate uniform from any convenient outlet, but would ask that they adhere to the school uniform policy in an attempt to avoid ill-advised purchases. Simply buying from a ‘school range’ is not a guarantee that it meets the De Aston uniform standards. The school can provide clear guidance to avoid having to repurchase uniform. Some items of second hand uniform may be available from the school. When selling second hand uniform, the school will give a high priority to keeping costs to a minimum. The school is mindful of its responsibility to sustainability and will wherever possible facilitate high levels of uniform recycling.
