Overview

Our aim is to provide our pupils with a broad base of theoretical, practical and applied skills to increase spatial awareness, problem solving skills, imagination development and, most importantly, self-confidence.

We live in a world surrounded by visual imagery. It is our role to empower our students to understand and decode the wide range of visual stimuli covering different cultures, times (past and present) and situations. This, along with studying the roles that artists, designers and craftsperson have played within them. By gaining an understanding of the visual language used, and applying it appropriately as a response to source material, the pupils’ appreciation of the work of others will increase and they will learn how to build upon these influences.

Students will explore a wide range of materials and processes, both in two and three dimensions, which, over the period of their learning, will build an extensive practical skills base. This in turn will allow individual development and exploration of themes and ideas through practical application.

Our themes of work ensure that students gain an aesthetic awareness of the world around them. This enables them to have a greater understanding of the world and allows them the confidence to make informed judgments about all the visual imagery used in a variety of media.

We provide a visually and intellectually stimulating environment for our students. We give them the power to develop ownership of their own work. Personal investigation and development of ideas and techniques, supported by our staff and themes of work, empower the students to realise their goals, build confidence and grow to appreciate the wider world around them.
