Extra Curricular Trips and Visits World Challenge Eco Group

The aim of this page is to keep people informed about our work and share with you some of the things we have been working on and our future plans.

Who are ‘Eco Committee’?

The Eco Committee are a group of like-minded individuals who meet at least once a month. Our group is comprised of around 20 students and 3 staff. Our aim is to try and create a better environment around our school and for the people, plants and animals who use it. We actively seek ways in which we can reduce the environmental impact of our school and try to improve the school environment.

Our aim!

Once a year we use an environmental audit tool to help us review our Eco practices which allows us to plan our actives. We have 10 guiding aims and these are;

Biodiversity– helping to create and maintain a wide range of plants and animals on the school grounds.
Energy– looking for ways to reduce our energy use in school, protect the environment and save money.
Global Citizenship- taking an active role in our school community and trying to make both our school and the world a more peaceful, sustainable and fairer place.
Healthy Living– look for ways in which we can use the natural world to improve our health and well-being.
Litter– reducing the amount of litter on the school site.
Marine– helping to protect and conserve the world’s oceans by educating both staff and students.
School Ground– Improving our school grounds for staff, students, plants and wildlife.
Transport– Promoting and encouraging sustainable transport for both students and staff.
Waste– thinking about the rubbish we produce… can we refuse, reduce, reuse, repair or recycle? What can we do to create less rubbish around school?
Water– making sure that we value and preserve water, our most precious natural resource

Each half-term we hold a ‘proper’ meeting and discuss the progress of our projects and plan for the next few months. Students regularly use the time to plan and develop their own personal projects. These can be very varied and depends on the student’s individual interests.

What we have done so far….

We have planted trees as part of the Queens Green Canopy with trees donated by the Woodland trust. We also redesigned and are currently rebuilding the pond by science to make it a more environmentally friendly area. We contacted local and national companies to help us. Skylark Homes Ltd provided us with rubble and sand for the base of the pond whilst Just Bee Honey Ltd sent us loads of wild flowers seeds to plant. We received a wonderful donation from the Market Rasen Rotary club which allowed us to purchase the pond liner. We are also in the planning stages to build a plastic bottle greenhouse and a bug hotel.
